Introducing your teacher, Mrs. Owens! (and the crowd goes wild)
I am incredibly excited to begin the year here at Hewes Middle School. I'm going on my eighth year of teaching (making this my 2nd at Hewes, and my 5th in TUSD). I've taught from third to sixth grade, and so I know exactly what you kiddos should know walking through my door the very first day!
A little about myself...
I recently celebrated my birthday on August 28th. I'm 29 (still a year left before I'm officially "old", according to my husband). My husband Jason and I have been married for just over a year. The photo to the left is from our Alaskan honeymoon cruise. Brrrrr...... Jason is an avid Angels and Lakers fan (well, we both are)! We don't have any kids (sorry, Mom), but we do have an 85-pound black bundle of energy appropriately named Kobe (Bryant Owens). He soared over the baby gate barrier the first day we brought him home. This buddy is quite the jumper. We're not quite sure WHAT he is: the shelter said "lab mix" on his kennel...that sounds nice, doesn't it?
One of my favorite activities when I'm home is cooking. My great-grandmother immigrated to America from Italy, and she passed on a lot of her traditional Italian recipes to my mother, who passed them on to me. I love making breakfast most of all, especially frittatas. Kobe doesn't mind it too much, either, as he's always at my heels when I'm whipping up something in the kitchen, begging for a bite.
My other (less cost-effieicent) hobby is traveling. I've been to Canada, Mexico, Israel, Italy, England, and the Philippines, as well as many parts of our great United States (to name a few Alaska, Washington, Oregon, New York, Georgia, Tennessee...). One of my favorite parts about sixth grade Social Studies is the fact that we get to travel to eras and locals all around the world: China, India, Israel, Mesopotamia, Rome, Egypt, and Greece.
I am overjoyed to have each of you in my class this year. Trust me when I tell you that middle school is indeed a transition from the schooling you are used to, but give it a chance to settle in. I promise you will come to treasure your years at Hewes. These three years will soar past faster than you can imagine. So learn the ropes, learn your locker combo, and learn what it means to be a Hewes Highlander.
We're all so glad you're here!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Owens
